This Recipe Was a Surprisingly Simple One!

Roasted cabbage

I tried cooking a different type of cabbage than what I usually make. Though the flavor wasn’t as sweet and mild as compared to my preferred Napa cabbage, it was worth testing the easy recipe.

My Story

Over a year ago, I was browsing the Wellness Mama website, which has many blog posts and podcasts on topics helpful for women and moms. One podcast kick-started my research on improving my sleep, which I wrote about here. In addition, there are healthy recipes in the blog section of which I’ve saved a couple.

Inspiring Recipe

The local supermarket has had green cabbage on sale many times before and I finally decided to buy some when it happened again. This was the best time to try the recipe that I’ve been holding on to, Roasted Cabbage Slices.

First Try

Purchasing a head of cabbage was all I needed to do. The rest of the ingredients were already at home.

Ingredients to Use

Of the five ingredients listed on the recipe, I made one substitution and eliminated another. Instead of coconut oil, I added olive oil. As for the herbs, I just skipped them since they were optional.

Steps to Prepare

Of the eight steps in the instructions, I followed the majority of them, except for Step 7. For this part, I didn’t broil the cabbage slices because they were already partially browned after roasting them for 50 minutes.

Time to Eat

As you can see, the cabbage slices became a pile of shreds after I transferred everything to a bowl for dinner.

The cabbage leaves were sweet. However, parts of them were extra chewy, peppery, and salty, though mixing them helped with the flavor.

Second Try

For the second round, I wanted to see if I could improve the texture and taste.

Ingredients to Use

I added the same basic ingredients to the cabbage as I did during the first attempt. However, instead of using fine pepper and salt in the amount listed on the recipe, I planned to grind some of each and sprinkle them over the slices twice.

Steps to Prepare

For the process, I repeated the same steps from the first try.

Compared to the first attempt, the cabbage was still sweet, but luckily it was not chewy nor overly salty and peppery.

To enhance the flavor of the green cabbage next time, I will do the following:

Continuous Improvement

  1. Experiment by adding some herbs, as noted on the recipe.

After adding an uneven amount of salt and pepper on the cabbage slices during the first round, I would like to share with my dumber self the following:

Lesson for Dumber Self

  1. Use a measuring spoon to scoop out spices from the jar instead of attempting to pour the right amount into the measuring spoon.

What will you do now?
